Thwack, every bow hunter’s favorite sound. It’s early bow season here in Florida and this is the perfect time to start filling my freezer. I call it backwoods grocery shopping. Thinning out some does is not only beneficial for game management, but it also helps get me prepared for a mature buck by breaking the ice.
This time of year the acorns are plenty, especially since we had such an abundance of rainfall this past summer. I placed my climber in a Cabbage Palm tree with a lot of cover, surrounded by oaks. Settled in my stand with my Hunter Safety System Harness attatched to the tree about thirty minutes before God’s sunrise, I’m ready to take in what he has in store for me. The birds start chirping, owls are hooting, and squirrels have begun their mission of finding and hiding acorns in the ground. I am videoing the hunt myself so I start to record my morning unfolding. It didn’t take long and I see white flickering underneath an oak tree. I sit patiently observing this healthy doe slowly make her way towards my stand. I ease to the standing position, grab my Elite Bow, and wait for an opportunity.
As I am watching this doe I begin to think of how natural the sport of hunting is. I am at one with nature getting ready to harvest an animal who is eating straight from what God created. She is in good health, strong, and well aware of her surroundings. Most people who buy meat in the store will not be able to experience this exact moment in which I find myself. She is now ten yards from my stand and she gives me a perfect shot. I attach my Scott Release, draw my Easton Arrow, settle my Spot Hogg Site on her heart, and squeeze. The Muzzy races through her vitals and I watch her expire no more than 6 seconds after I took the shot.
I sit down in my stand and thank God for providing me with such an opportunity and an experience. This meat will go to feed my family and fuel our muscles with the most wholesome protein, straight from the backwoods. Train Hard, Hunt Strong, and Eat what you harvests.
